I am a Chinese male. I was born in the UK and have lived here all my life. My wife is African, and came the UK when she was in her teens.
Growing up I never imagined that I would marry a black girl. The school I went to was almost exclusively white.
When I grew up I thought I would end up marrying someone who was Chinese or white. However, it seems that most British born Chinese girls only want to date white men. I have had very strange experiences with Chinese girls in the UK. I have shared houses and workplaces with Chinese girls who have refused to acknowledge me even to say hello. Sometimes when I pass a British born Chinese girl in public she will turn her head to show she is not interested in me. It does not seem to occur to her that I may not be interested in her.
I first got to know African girls at when I went to college. I don't know why but I found that African girls were very friendly towards me, more than any other race. My wife and I first got to know each other as friends. We realized that we had a fondness for each other and attraction developed from there. I liked her for who she was. Her race was just a detail. At the time I did not see at as a positive or a negative. I just felt that I wanted to be with her and I did not care what race she was. She felt the same about me.
Nevertheless, the difference in our races has enriched our relationship. I have introduced her to Asian foods and films, she has introduced me to African foods and music.
We have visited each others families in our countries of origin. There has been acceptance on both sides. Although initially skeptical, my family have come like my wife very much. They even say that she is Chinese. By that they mean that she is modest, respects her elders, and loves good food.
My wife and I have never seen another AM/BF [Asian Male / Black Female] couple. It's funny because to us our relationship is so natural it is as if we have known each other all our lives. However at the same time we know it is very unusual.
In the UK we don't get much attention. Maybe the odd glance. When we travel it can be a different story. In New York [about 7 years ago] some black guys would stare at us, and when we went to Chinatown people would stare almost open mouthed.
We travel often in South East Asia we do get lots of attention there. One time we went to a market in Vietnam and one by one people stopped what they were doing to stare until the whole market had ground to a halt. People were making comments but they were all saying how beautiful my wife was. My wife gets many comments from women in South East Asia who tell her how beautiful she is, her hair is, even what a nice ass she has!
One time we were at a concert in the UK by a great sax player and half way through he started to wonder through the audience. He was a Jamaican guy, really amazing musician and one of my heroes. I remember he was wearing a Bruce Lee T-shirt. He came up to my and my girlfriend [this is before we were married]. He gestured to me 'are you together'. I nodded and he started to play 'here comes the bride' on his sax. I know he only approached us because we were a Chinese - black couple. It was a really cool gesture and I love him for it.
I hope that our story is of interest someone out there. It would be nice to see other AM/BF couples. My wife and I are still in love 8 years after we first met. When we are together I want to hold her, smell her skin and tell her I love her. My wife has always had lots of attention from other men of all races. I feel lucky she has chosen me.
What if Prince Charming had never shown up? Would Snow White have slept in that glass coffin forever? Or would she have eventually woken up, spit out the apple, gotten a job, a health-care package and a baby from her local neighborhood sperm bank?
