Why do females take photos / videos in portrait mode?
This is what I don't get.
How come every girl that I've ever asked to take a photo or video of me always turns the camera 90o to use the portrait mode?
Example: in a recent dance competition that I entered, I gave my camera to a group of female friends and they all had a try at recording or taking a photo of me in various rounds. I just checked the results and every single one of them was in portrait. Not so much of a problem with the photos but the videos are a pain in the arse as they are too narrow (missing a lot of action) and have to be rotated and re-encoded. :-/
Next time I'm definitely giving my camera to a guy! At least we know how to hold it.

An innate sense of aesthetic perhaps?
Using the portrait mode for photographs reduces a lot of "dead space".
Not my sister though. Whenever she takes a photo there is always tonnes of dead space because she never frames the pictures she takes.

I agree with that but i dont think its gender specific. also when you ask someone to take a video/photo of YOU. there is an implication that indeed you should be the subject matter rather then your surroundings. and portrait mode usually as RS said leaves less "dead space". what really needs to happen is for cameras to automatically rotate the video for u.
Nordic-kulta, Pidän sinusta oikein paljon. Kiinalaisten ja suomalaisten lapsista tulee kauniita!
Err no it isn't a sense of aesthetic. It's the exact opposite! Ask any professional photographer and they'd tell you the same rant I had. We can crop photos easily these days. Having a wider shot gives you more options to do with the results later on. That's why films are shot at 1.33:1, 1.77:1 and 2.35:1 and all ratios are watchable. Have you seen any film that's shot in portrait mode?
Yeah, that's unfortunate, isn't it, Diesel11? I mean, most of them can't even cook & clean these days!
Perhaps she thinks thats your best side? lol I mean to say that maybe you look better in her eyes from portrait rather than any other perspective.
My Father is a nightmare when it comes to taking photos/vids.. He seems to always capture the floor beautifully, and he is well known for this skill.
I think youre lucky to have a pic that has your face in it, because if it was my Dad taking the pic/vid for you.. well god only knows what it would turn out like!
Oh and before i forget.. My Mother has the habit of chopping off heads!

lol you have great parents! My mum does the exact same thing btw! My dad has acquired an annoying habit since I bought him a digi-cam. He takes photos of every bloody thing and NEVER deletes any bad shot. He reckons everything look great, even the massively failed ones. :/

Maybe, but whenever I did a full swing-out with my dance partner, you can only see half of the couple, because of the portrait frame.
