I'm thinking about going to places like High Springs, Lake City and Marianna, FL near future. They are in rather remote redneck part of Florida, Marianna more than other two, I think. Has anybody been near those places?
I'm from Alachua County, and went to school in High Springs.
By your screen name, and the other places you want to go, I'm just going to hazard a guess and say you are looking at going to Ginnie Springs for a cave dive. Do it. You will not be disappointed. All the springs there are absolutely gorgeous, and while I'm not a cave diver myself, I have enough friends who are to know that the cave at Ginnie is worth your while.
So yeah, go! You'll have fun. There's not a whole lot to do other than the nature stuff, but it's a good place. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me.
Oh, and if it's discrimination you're worried about, I can tell you, it's really not too bad. Yeah, High Springs is pretty out of the way, but it's still close enough to Gainesville that people aren't total racist hicks. Even though almost the entire town is white, they are rather accepting as far as small towns go.
To give you some clue, my husband and I got married at Poe Springs which is in High Springs (if you're driving out to Ginnie, you'll see it! LOL) and nobody gave us any hell about it what so ever. We ran our wedding announcement in the paper and everything. No problems. Some people have kind of stared when I'd walk down the street with him and stuff, but people there know me. I'm a hometown girl. My husband isn't from around there. I think they stare more because they don't know who he is than because he's Asian.
The other thing is that the people you're most likely to come into contact with is more the eco crowd, for lack of a better term, and that's kind of the crowd I ran with in high school. Very accepting lot, even in that rural area. You won't find discrimination with those people.

Ginnie is on my hit list along with several others. I've only been to caves on Yucatan penninsula and they are absolutely stunning not only geologically but also historically as ancient Mayan potteries are perfectly preserved but I think it's about time I give Florida caves a try.
Have you heard of Cadillac Motel in High Springs?
Oh, by the way, I went to Ft. Sill for my basic training

I'm not all that worried about it. I don't live too far from the city formerly known as Klanaheim... all city council members of Anaheim were Klan members back in the 50s.

Sweet! Yea, I know the Cadillac Motel. Used to drive by that every time I'd skip school and be hauling ass out to the Ichetucknee River with a truck load of a dozen of my closest friends! LOL
It's really old, one of those ones from the 1960's which is one story, and kind of built in a horseshoe type of shape, where everyone has a parking space right by the door of their room, and there's a pool in the middle of the horseshoe. It's right on 441, which is the busiest highway through town, but really, you probably won't find anything that's much closer to the springs road, so it might be a good bet. I've never stayed there or anything, but yeah, I know the place.
Luckily, if you get there, and don't like it, you can always shell out the big bucks and stay at the Rustic Inn, which is owned by Great Outdoors Trading Company. It's more expensive, but it's nice, and the setting is really beautiful. Rustic Inn Bed & Breakfast High Springs, FL Undoubtedly, if you're just stopping in for a night or two, the Cadillac Motel will do fine, though. It would for me anyhow.
Oooooh and also, the Cadillac Motel is right near this really neat diner, so that's definitely a plus.

That's awesome! When did you go through there? I went to Ft. Leonard Wood in 2001. (And my husband went to PLDC at Sill when he was stationed at Riley back in the late 1990's.)

In 95, back when terrorists looked like Timothy McVeigh and we were able to catch them.
