Hi. I was never much of a gamer...I've played a couple of hours of the first releases of Star/Warcraft here and there, but never really got into them.
Now that I've purchased a laptop, having an RPG on the machine seems like a good idea, if I have to kill some time in a cafe. Was thinking someone could recommend a game for me. I have no idea what's out there, but here are the aspects I'm looking for, in a game that would interest me:
1. a pure RPG. In other words, not hack and slash (Diablo). And definitely not a first-person shooter (Doom)
2. Largely focused on first-person. If you've ever played Shadowgate for the original 8-bit Nintendo, that's exactly my cup of tea.
3. Very little or none of the traditional RPG elements: random encounters (to build experience) , labyrinthine dungeons (I hate those!) , real-time attacks (I actually prefer the slower-paced, strategy-emphasizing turn-based systems).
4. Setting would ideally be medieval, or fantasy realms.
Ok...so, anything out there that fits the above, more or less? Aspect #2 up there is negotiable, only because I don't think first-person RPG's exist.
Morrowind and Oblivion imo based on your criteria. Morrowind is older, so not your up to minute state of the art graphics, but I love the game play and pull it out every once in a while. You can get a cheap pack of Morrowind with expansions.
the play is open ended and not turn based tho. I'm a little out of the loop on the more recent games, my gamer geek days are over due to time constraints
cool..I'll check out Morrowind. I think a less-graphic intensive game would actually be a good thing, since the laptop isn't impressive in terms of processing power. I didn't buy it for gaming..
I think I'm the same type of gamer as you. This is not an RPG, but Civ IV: the Fall from Heaven 2 module. It lacks the roleplaying, but the feel is there.
I've heard the Morrowind (Elder Scrolls) series is absolutely amazing. I've never played it myself.
And when in doubt you can always play Princess Maker 2. No, seriously. Try it.
Edit: Here's the link to a downloadable location. It's abandonware, so this is legal. Click on "PC" next to the Download row near the bottom of the page.
For games that old you might consider using DOSBox also, although you don't need it.
